Traditionalist Roman Catholics of Nova Scotia
Schola Fidelis supports Traditionalist Roman Catholics in Nova Scotia who are passionate about what unites us in our faith. We serve as a single point of reference for anyone seeking Traditionalist information, instruction and fellowship, especially those who are isolated and unsure of their options in the Church. As faithful Schoolmen we hope that the content provided here is helpful. Please contact the sources listed throughout the site if you have questions regarding Mass times, scheduled events or choir rehearsals.
A Traditionalist Roman Catholic is one who views the deposit of faith as transmitted through historical tradition rather than contemporary adaptation, prioritizing the Latin Rite and pre-conciliar spiritual disciplines.
Devotions: You maintain pre-Vatican II practices such as women wearing headcoverings (veils or mantillas) in church, use traditional prayer books, recite the Rosary, and observe traditional abstinance and fasting rules.
Liturgy: You prefer or exclusively attend the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM) using the 1962 or earlier Roman Missal and feast day calendars. Traditionalist Catholics will travel significant distances and endure social ostracism to attend the TLM.
Orientation: You prefer the priest celebrating ad orientem (towards the "east" facing the altar) rather than versus populum (towards the people), viewing the former as essential for emphasizing the sacrificial nature of the Mass.
Sacraments: You receive Holy Communion from a priest or deacon on the tongue kneeling, avoid Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and long for the return of the minor orders.
Theology: You believe the Second Vatican Council introduced unnecessary or damaging changes to liturgy and doctrine (Hermeneutic of Rupture), and you seek a restoration of the Church's perennial tradition viewing modernist innovations and liberal social agendas with skepticism.
